Medical School Graduation Years 2011-12 Through 2017-18
The table below displays the number of U.S. MD-granting and DO-granting school graduates from a given academic year who subsequently completed a residency program in each specialty, by type of degree program (e.g., MD-PhD). The data displayed are for the most recently completed ACGME-accredited specialty and subspecialty as of Dec. 31, 2022. For example, for the graduating class of 2017-18, Emergency Medicine was the last completed specialty for 1,480 MD graduates, 14 MD-PhD graduates, 44 graduates with another combined MD-graduate degree (e.g., MD-MPH), and 592 DO graduates. The graduation years are shown in three-year increments, from 2011-12 through 2017-18. Individuals who are shown as having completed a residency may be active again in another residency program. Counts shown for specialties do not include counts for the related subspecialties. Please contact residentreport@aamc.org with any comments or questions.
Selected Finding: Looking at the 2017-18 graduates, 78.8% of graduates of U.S. MD-granting schools had completed at least one ACGME-accredited residency training program within four years of graduating, and 82.3% of graduates of U.S. DO-granting schools had completed at least one ACGME-accredited residency training program within four years of graduating.

*Before the single accreditation of residency training, about 42% of DO graduates trained in AOA-accredited programs rather than ACGME-accredited programs.
Note: The counts of MD graduates include individuals who graduated with an MD, a BA-MD, or a BS-MD dual degree. The "MD-Other" category includes the following combined degrees: MA-MD, MS-MD, MD-Dental, MD-JD, MD-MBA, MD-MPH, MD-MPA, and MD-Other. ACGME specialties and subspecialties with no graduates in the years displayed were excluded.
