The Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarships are given to five outstanding students entering their third year of medical school who have shown leadership in efforts to eliminate inequalities in medical education and health care and demonstrated leadership efforts in addressing educational, societal, and health care needs of racial and ethnical minorities in the United States.

Shermeeka Hogans-Mathews, M.S. of the Florida State University College of Medicine expresses her excitement about receiving the award. She discusses her role for advancing health equality and diversity as well as her career and educational goals.  She offers advice for students aspiring to be in her position and for leaders working to advance health equality and diversity in medical education and the workforce.
