AAMC Award for Excellence in Medical Education

The AAMC Award for Excellence in Medical Education* honors an individual or a team of two individuals whose contributions have had a demonstrable impact on advancing medical education. As the AAMC’s most prestigious honor, the AAMC Award for Excellence in Medical Education recognizes the highest standards in medical education.

The awardee receives the AAMC Award for Excellence and a prize of $10,000. Nominations are due Jan. 26, 2024.

NOMINATE

AAMC Award for Excellence in Medical Education

Individuals or teams of two individuals may be nominated. All nominees must have a faculty appointment at AAMC-member medical schools or teaching hospitals, but rank is not a criterion for this award.

Nominees should have made significant contributions to medical education and will be evaluated by the review committee on the following criteria:

  • The nominee has had a significant national impact on medical education, above and beyond one’s own institution. This may be a broad impact across the medical education continuum or an in-depth impact in a particular area, such as undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, or interprofessional education.
  • The nominee has a strong record of medical education scholarship.
  • The nominee has substantive experience as a teacher and/or mentor within the health professions community or as a collaborative partner with patients, families, and communities.
  • The nominee demonstrates standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity.

Nominees should demonstrate excellence in all criteria listed above.

Individuals or teams of two individuals may be nominated. All nominees must have a faculty appointment at an AAMC-member medical school or teaching hospital, but rank is not a criterion for this award.

Anyone may submit a nomination. Nominations must be received by Jan. 26, 2024, via the electronic entry form. The fields required for nomination can be previewed here.

The review committee will select up to three finalists. Nominators of finalists will be notified by March 8, 2024, that they are invited to submit letters of support. Final-round letters of support must include:

  • One two-page letter of support of the finalist authored by an AAMC-member institution’s dean, chief executive officer, or president on institutional letterhead.
  • Three additional two-page letters of support attesting to how the finalist demonstrates the criteria for the Award for Excellence in Medical Education.

Letters of support must be submitted by April 5, 2024. There is no need to compile these letters before the notification on March 8.

The winner of the award will be notified by July 12, 2024, and honored during the AAMC Virtual Awards Recognition event.

The AAMC Award for Excellence in Medical Education honors an individual or a team of two individuals whose contributions have had a demonstrable impact on advancing medical education.

Adina Kalet, MD, MPH, FACP, FAACH, is the 2023 recipient of the Award for Excellence in Medical Education. Throughout her 30-year career as a leader, mentor, and educator in academic medicine, Dr. Kalet has been an advocate for helping clinicians develop their communication skills and has authored more than 200 papers and three books underscoring her mission to help medical students better connect with their patients.
