HHS Announces New National Coordinator for HIT

December 20, 2013—Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Dec. 19 announced that New Orleans Health Commissioner Karen DeSalvo, M.D., M.P.H., M.Sc., will be the new national coordinator for health information technology (HIT) at HHS.

In an email to staff, Secretary Sebelius noted that “DeSalvo has been at the forefront of efforts to modernize the New Orleans health care system” and that her “hands-on experience with health delivery system reform and HIT and its potential to improve health care and public health will be invaluable assets to the Office of the National Coordinator and the Department.”

DeSalvo will succeed Farzad Mostashari, M.D., who stepped down in October. Acting National Coordinator Jacob Reider, M.D., will serve as chief medical officer in the National Coordinator’s office.
