PCORI Announces Funding Awards

December 21, 2012—On a special Board of Governor’s teleconference webinar, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Dec. 18 announced that it has approved 25 awards, totaling $40.7 million over three years, to fund patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research projects under the first four areas of its National Priorities for Research and its Research Agenda.

The awards were part of PCORI’s first cycle of primary research funding [see Washington Highlights, May 25] and were selected from among nearly 500 completed applications submitted earlier this year. AAMC member institutions received more than half of the funding awards.

Awards were distributed geographically and topically throughout the country. The four priority areas were Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment Areas, Improving Healthcare Systems, Communication and Dissemination Research and Addressing Disparities. The fifth priority area, Accelerating Patient Centered Outcomes Research and Methodological Research, will be funded next year, with proposals due March 13, 2013.
