On the Hill…

December 14, 2012—House Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-Mich.) Dec. 12 announced the addition of three former Democratic members to the committee in the 113th Congress. This follows the Nov. 30 announcement by Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) welcoming four new Republican members to the committee. The seven new members include:

  • Tim Griffin (R-Ark.);

  • Mike Kelly (R-Pa.);

  • Tim Scott (R-S.C.);

  • Todd Young (R-Ind.);

  • Danny Davis (D-Ill.);

  • Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.); and

  • Allyson Schwartz (D-Pa.).

The Democratic Steering Committee Dec. 12 released the committee assignments for Democratic senators in the 113th Congress (The tentative assignments are subject to the approval of the full Democratic caucus). Committee chairs and new Democratic members relevant to academic medicine include:

 

Appropriations:

  • Daniel Inouye(Hawai), Chair; 
  • Jeanne Shaheen(N.H.);
  • Jeff Merkley (Ore.);

Finance:

  •      Max Baucus (Mont.), Chair;

  •     Sherrod Brown (Ohio);

  •     Michael Bennet (Colo.);

Health, Education, Labor & Pensions:

  • Tom Harkin (Iowa), Chair;

  • Tammy Baldwin (Wis.);

  • Chris Murphy (Conn.);

  • Elizabeth Warren (Mass.);

 Budget:

  • Patty Murray (Wash.), Chair;

  • Tammy Baldwin (Wis.);
  • Tim Kaine (Va.);
  • Angus King (Maine);

Veterans’ Affairs:

  • Bernie Sanders  (Vt.), Chair;
  • Richard Blumenthal (Conn.); and
  • Mazie Hirono (Hawaii).
