On the Hill…

November 30, 2012—Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-Ill.) Nov. 21 announced his retirement days after winning reelection to his seat representing Illinois’ second district. Rep. Jackson was elected to Congress in 1995 and served on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies.

Additionally, the House Republican Conference ratified the committees’ chairmanships for the 113th Congress. There were several changes, however, committees affecting AAMC member institutions largely remain the same as the 112th Congress:

  • Appropriations: Rep. Harold Rogers (Ky.);

  • Budget: Rep. Paul Ryan (Wis.);

  • Education and the Workforce: Rep. John Kline (Minn.);

  • Energy and Commerce: Rep. Fred Upton (Mich.);

  • Science, Space and Technology: Rep. Lamar Smith (Texas), formerly Rep. Ralph M. Hall (Texas);

  • Veterans’ Affairs: Rep. Jeff Miller (Fla.); and

  • Ways and Means: Rep. Dave Camp (Mich.)

The House Democrats have yet to ratify their committee ranking member positions.
