PCORI Releases Second Funding Announcement

September 21, 2012—The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Sept. 17 announced its second round of funding requests to support clinical comparative effectiveness research. Like the first round announced in May [see Washington Highlights, May 25], these PCORI funding announcements (PFAs) will solicit proposals for well designed, rigorous research targeting diverse topics and conditions of concern to patients and their caregivers.

Up to $96 million in research funding will be distributed through PCORI funding mechanisms this year. Deadlines for this funding announcement are: Oct. 15 for required letters of intent and full proposals due Dec. 17. Application materialsare available on the PCORI Web site.

As in the first round, these PFAs address the focus areas described in the National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda. Four of the five areas are included in the current PFA: assessment of prevention, diagnosis and treatment options, improving healthcare systems, communication and dissemination and addressing disparities. The fifth priority of accelerating patient-centered and methodological research will be issued at a later date.

The previous funding cycle that closed in August 2012 produced almost 500 applications. Proposals from that cycle are under review, and award announcements are expected in December 2012.
