PCORI Board of Governors Releases Funding Announcements

May 25, 2012—At its May 20 meeting in Denver, the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors reviewed and approved the funding announcements (PFA). Collectively, the PFAs make $96 million available to those engaged in patient centered outcomes research.  Letters of intent will be due June 15, with full proposals due July 31. These funding announcements mark the first time PCORI has posted calls for proposals since the initial call for pilot projects in the fall of 2011 [see Washington Highlights, Sept. 23, 2011].

At the same meeting, the Board of Governors approved the final version of the National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda for release. This version has been revised in response to public comment [see Washington Highlights, March 16]. PCORI emphasized the decision to retain a broad scope of interest, rather than addressing specific diseases or conditions. The report will guide future requests for proposals.

The Board of Governors also approved the Methodology Committee’s report. PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby said the report is not intended to function as a “handbook of research methods,” rather it should be considered a guide for standards in research. The report will now be made available for public comment on PCORI’s website, and is expected to be finalized in November 2012.

The strategic plan also was presented to the Board of Governors, along with a timeline for development of the plan. Included were a current state assessment slated for the summer 2012, followed by revision and presentation of an updated plan. The board will be asked to approve the strategic plan at the September meeting.
