Council of Academic Health System Executives (CAHSE)

The Council of Academic Health System Executives (CAHSE, pronounced case) supports the CEOs and other senior executives in comparable roles who lead the AAMC-member academic health systems.

Transitioning to new council for health system executives

The AAMC Board of Directors and the AAMC Assembly have approved the transition of the Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems (COTH) to the Council of Academic Health System Executives (CAHSE). The new council focuses on the unique challenges faced by system-level leaders who oversee the highly complex clinical enterprises that improve health care outcomes while supporting medical education, research, and community collaboration. For more information on the transition, access our FAQ page.

CAHSE

CAHSE members include the CEOs, presidents, and other executives who lead the AAMC’s nearly 400-member teaching hospitals and health systems. They concentrate on issues specific to academic medicine, such as demonstrating its value and societal good; financing graduate medical education; funds flow and enterprisewide mission alignment; and mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships with community providers.

Recognized as a benchmark for leadership excellence in patient care, medical education, and research, CAHSE membership is for hospitals and health systems by application. Applicants must be reviewed by the CAHSE Administrative Board and approved by the AAMC Board of Directors. Applicants must have both a formal and documented affiliation agreement with an accredited medical school and/or school of osteopathic medicine and at least one ACGME-accredited residency program. Review a list of current AAMC-member hospitals and health systems.

Becoming a member of CAHSE allows you access to a variety of resources. Learn about CAHSE membership benefits.

The CAHSE Administrative Board works with AAMC staff and the membership at large to develop and implement resources and programming that addresses critical issues for AAMC-member teaching hospitals and health systems and the executives who run them. The CAHSE chair and chair-elect serve on the AAMC Board of Directors as representatives of hospital and health system members. Learn more about CAHSE leadership.

CAHSE members (and their designated representatives) may access a range of AAMC member-only benefits including: financial and operational benchmarking data and reports; advocacy and advocacy-related resources; affinity groups, listservs, data, networking, and learning opportunities for professionals sharing similar roles and responsibilities at member institutions across the country; quality improvement initiatives; support for new health care payment and delivery models; physician workforce data; discounted use of certain AAMC services such as the VSLO® program; discounted meeting registration and publication fees; and much more.
