AAMC Applauds Passage of Spending Package

Measure Includes Provisions Crucial to Veterans and Zika Response

Washington, D.C., September 29, 2016AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, MD, issued the following statement on the passage of a spending package that includes the full FY 2017 Military Construction-Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) spending bill and a continuing resolution (CR) that funds other agencies through December 9, 2016, and provides emergency supplemental funding for Zika:

“The AAMC commends the House and Senate for passing a spending package that funds the VA through the end of FY 2017 and includes a $44 million increase for VA Medical and Prosthetic Research, as urged by the AAMC and the Friends of VA coalition during conference negotiations.

Congress also included critical support for Zika response, with funding for vaccine development and diagnostics and other related research through the National Institutes of Health (NIH); vaccine development through the Department of Health and Human Services Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority; and $6 million to assign National Health Service Corps clinicians, including pediatric subspecialists, to affected areas to combat the spread of the disease.

We strongly urge Congress to pass a full omnibus spending bill when they return in the fall that funds all other agencies through FY 2017 and includes the Senate-proposed $34.1 billion for NIH.”
