Learn, Apply, Bridge (LAB) Series

The Learn, Apply, Build (Lab) Series highlights the meaningful work taking place across the community. These sessions provide a space to share promising practices and explore practical, innovative approaches relevant to faculty and professional staff.

Designed to be interactive, each session combines focused learning with opportunities for application, allowing participants to engage with content, reflect on their own context, and leave with ideas they can apply in their work.

Coaching for Professional and Personal Growth Webinar (video). This webinar introduces coaching as a powerful tool for advancing career development and personal well-being. Participants will gain insights into how coaching can support goal setting, leadership growth, and resilience. It was presented by the former Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS) in 2026.

The following webinars were developed by the former Group on Faculty Affairs and are being retained here as a professional development resource:

  • Legacy in Leadership: Pathways to Senior Roles in Academia (video). This 2025 webinar provides an overview of the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of senior leadership positions such as dean, provost, president, and health system CEO. Participants will gain insight into the skills and experiences needed for these roles while identifying practical steps to prepare for future leadership opportunities.
  • Professional Development Webinar: Innovative Programs for Mid-Career Faculty in Academic Medicine (video). Created in 2024, this webinar explores innovative programs designed to support mid-career faculty in academic medicine. Some highlights include best practices, successful initiatives, and the impact of these programs on professional development, work-life balance, and career advancement.
  • AAMC Faculty Life Cycle Series. This collection of webinars covers topics central to faculty affairs and development professionals. Each webinar provides practical information and promising practices to enhance professional development throughout the faculty career life cycle.
  • Onward and Upward: Exploring New Horizons for Advanced Career Faculty Webinar (video). This 2026 webinar highlights the strengths and contributions of advanced career faculty while exploring strategies for navigating transitions, pursuing new opportunities, and planning for retirement. Participants will also learn about effective programs that support this stage of career development and consider ways to implement similar resources at their own institutions.
  • Reexamine, Refocus, Retrain for Renewal Webinar Series. The Reexamine, Refocus, Retrain for Renewal series provides resources, insights, and best practices focusing on mentorship, self-assessment, and establishing a development plan.

Toolkits

Toolkit submissions are developed by members of the community and are designed to provide practical guidance on a variety of topics relevant to faculty and professional staff in academic medicine and science. Each resource offers an overview of the topic, highlights promising practices, and includes considerations for implementation along with additional references. We welcome submissions and topic ideas from the community — please contact us if you are interested in contributing.

A Guide to Prepare for Your First Job in Academic Medicine (PDF). A practical guide for trainees and early career professionals preparing for their first academic role. It covers career planning, interviews, contracts, and setting yourself up for success. (2025)

Workshop Preparation and Presentation (PDF). This resource explains how workshops can serve as a meaningful form of scholarship in academic medicine. It offers guidance for developing, presenting, and extending the impact of workshop-based work. (2022)

Coaching for Professional and Personal Growth (PDF). An overview of coaching as a tool for professional and personal development. It highlights how coaching can support career transitions, goal setting, communication, and work-life integration. (2024)

Voters Education Initiative: Engagement and Empowerment (PDF). This toolkit explores nonpartisan voter education and registration in health care and academic settings. It provides guidance for supporting civic engagement in ways that align with institutional missions and federal law. (2024)

Writing an Effective Summary of Your Career (PDF). A practical guide to summarizing your career accomplishments clearly and effectively. It helps faculty present their experience, impact, and professional trajectory for promotion, leadership, or new opportunities. (2023)

Brown Bag Lunch

The Faculty and Staff Vitality Brown Bag Series is a recurring virtual session designed to bring colleagues together for shared learning, connection, and exchange of practical approaches across academic medicine. These sessions highlight timely topics relevant to faculty and professional staff and provide a space to learn from peers, explore emerging practices, and engage in meaningful dialogue. The series featured on this page was originally developed by the former Group on Faculty Affairs. It is being retained as a resource to current Faculty and Staff Vitality members:

Community Conversations

Conversations That Matter (CTM) is a dialogue-based series designed to bring faculty and professional staff together for shared learning, reflection, and exchange. Using a small group, facilitated format, CTM sessions create space for participants to explore timely topics, share perspectives, and discuss practical approaches relevant to the academic workforce.

Offered both in person and virtually throughout the year, CTM sessions provide an opportunity to learn from peers, gain insight into diverse institutional practices, and build meaningful connections. Key themes and takeaways are shared below following each session to support continued learning and application across institutions.

Understanding and Addressing Sexual Harassment in Academic Medicine. A first-of-its-kind AAMC analysis examining the prevalence, nature, and impact of sexual harassment among U.S. medical school faculty, with insights to support safer workplace environments.

Faculty and Staff

Faculty Roster (FAMOUS Reporting Tool) (login required). A comprehensive database of U.S. medical school faculty and department chairs, with demographic, rank, and trend data spanning from 1966 to the present. Access is available to Faculty and Staff Vitality Group members and designated institutional representatives, with select public tables available online.

U.S. Medical School Faculty Report. A detailed compensation benchmarking resource for full-time faculty, offering customizable data by rank, specialty, region, and gender. Available to institutional leaders and via purchase for others.

StandPoint™ Surveys. A suite of research-based engagement surveys designed to assess faculty and staff experiences in academic medicine. These surveys provide institutions with actionable data on workplace culture, satisfaction, and retention to inform decision-making and improve organizational performance.

Medical School Operations Promising Practices. This collection of promising practices is meant to serve as a community pool of knowledge, shared by medical school leaders for medical school leaders.

Leadership Guide for Faculty Affairs Professionals. Articles and resources to help support faculty affairs deans and administrators as they develop and implement institutional policies and professional development activities. This guide was developed by the former Group on Faculty Affairs and is being retained here as a professional development resource.

Human Resources Toolkit. This toolkit offers ready-to-use HR documents for academic medical centers, including job descriptions, policies, and faculty letter templates. It was created to support administrative professionals with practical, peer-shared resources. It was originally developed by the former Group on Business Affairs — Human Resources Interest Group.

Residents

Report on Residents. This annual report provides key tables on demographics, specialties, and training outcomes across the GME continuum.

GME Track. GME Track collects program- and resident-level data that inform reports on residency training.

Applicants and Matriculants

Student Records System (SRS). A centralized system tracking medical student enrollment and progression from matriculation through graduation, supporting national reporting and institutional analysis.

FACTS: Applicants and Matriculants Data. A collection of national data tables on applicants, matriculants, students, and graduates, including breakdowns by gender and program type.

Matriculating Student Questionnaire (MSQ) Report. An annual survey of incoming medical students capturing background, aspirations, and early perspectives to help institutions assess and improve the student experience.

Year Two Questionnaire (Y2Q) Report. A survey of second-year medical students focused on learning environment, adjustment, and career plans, providing insights for program evaluation.

Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) Report. A comprehensive survey of graduating medical students that examines educational experiences, career intentions, and debt, informing institutional improvement efforts.

Excellence in Academic Medicine

Women of Color Initiative. A collaborative effort across AAMC affinity groups to increase awareness and understanding of intersectionality and the experiences of women of color in academic medicine and science.

The State of Women in Academic Medicine. A data-driven report highlighting the representation of women across the academic medicine pathway — from trainees to leadership — using AAMC and external data sources.

Our Voices: Black Women in Scientific Research. This project spotlights six Black women scientific researchers across the career spectrum — early-career pioneers, mid-career leaders, and established experts — as the authors of their own narratives.

Resources to Cultivate Excellence in Academic Medicine. This page curates a wide range of AAMC tools, guides, and learning resources designed to support excellence across academic medicine. It brings together materials on topics such as workforce development, education, accessibility, and organizational culture to help institutions and individuals strengthen practices and outcomes.

AAMC IDEAS Learning Series. A webinar series that convenes experts from across academic medicine to share promising practices and effective resources for cultivating excellence. The series focuses on building community, expanding access to opportunities, and strengthening relationship-centered engagement.
