The Women of Color and Intersectionality Initiative is a collaborative initiative to address the visibility, awareness, and advocacy of intersectionality and women of color in academic medicine, organized and led by both the Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS) and the GCEC, in partnership with other AAMC clusters, as well as multiple AAMC Affinity Groups.
The goal of this initiative is to provide a platform for women of color in academic medicine and their allies to advocate for the advancement of women of color in academic medicine through knowledge sharing, project development, and community building best practices.

Learn Serve Lead Session: Leadership Lessons from Women of Color Deans All Can Use to Thrive in Academic Medicine
Sunday, November 8, 2026, 1:15-2:15 p.m. PT
A panel of medical school deans will share their personal and leadership strategies for building supportive environments and engage with participants to provide actionable strategies that all can use to thrive in academic medicine. This session aims to promote promising leadership strategies that can benefit all faculty, with an additional focus of strategies to retain women of color faculty, who have not increased their representation in faculty ranks in over a decade. To retain all faculty, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, and the talents they bring to academic medicine, this session creates an affirming space to address barriers to advancement in academic workplaces.
