Beyond the Bedside: Social Determinants of Health Curriculum and Assessment in the Health Professions

(90 min.) This webinar, co-sponsored by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing ( AACN External Link), highlights integrated curriculum models from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and The George Washington University School of Nursing that are used to assess learners’ knowledge and application of the social determinants of health. Presenters outline how community-based experiences and simulation-based learning can impact educational outcomes and enhance health professions training in the social and economic factors that influence health. There is an extended Q&A session at the end.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe at least three examples of the social determinants of health and their influence on health and health equity
  • Compare and contrast two methods to assess learners’ ability to apply knowledge and skills of the social determinants of health in real and simulated environments
  • Identify potential academic or community-based partnerships that could be developed or leveraged to enhance health professions training in the social determinants of health
