Senate Moves Toward Vote on Tax Reform

December 1, 2017—The Senate Nov. 29 began debate on tax reform legislation with a vote likely to occur on Friday or early next week (see Washington Highlights Nov. 17, Nov. 10).

Several Republican senators expressed concerns with the legislation during Thursday evening debate, including Senators Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is now working to tweak the bill in order to gain the necessary 50 votes. In the House, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) scheduled a vote for Monday to go to conference with the Senate to reconcile differences between the House and Senate bills.

The AAMC has sent several letters both to the Senate Finance Committee and to Senate Leadership detailing our concerns with the legislation. Most recently, the AAMC signed on to a community letter urging support for an amendment filed by Senator James Lankford (R-Okla.) that would allow non-itemizing taxpayers to deduct charitable gifts up to one-third of the standard deduction threshold. The amendment, if adopted, is aimed at encouraging charitable giving.
