Senate Confirms Dr. Murthy as US Surgeon General

December 19, 2014—The Senate Dec.15 confirmed, 51-43, Vivek Murthy, M.D., M.B.A., as U.S. Surgeon General. Dr. Murthy has been awaiting confirmation since November 2013 after being nominated by President Barack Obama.

Prior to his confirmation, Dr. Murthy worked as an internal medicine attending physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and as an instructor at Harvard Medical School. He received support from many national health care organizations, including the AAMC [see Washington Highlights, Dec. 12]. Among many expected initiatives, Dr. Murthy has previously identified obesity and chronic disease as platforms for his tenure.

Dr. Murthy succeeds former Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A., who resigned in July 2013. Since then, Rear Admiral Boris D. Lushniak, M.D., M.P.H, has served as acting surgeon general.
