AAMC Urges Senate to Confirm Murthy as Surgeon General

December 12, 2014—AAMC Chief Public Policy Officer Atul Grover, M.D., Ph.D., Dec. 9 sent a letter  to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) expressing support for the nomination of Vivek Murthy, M.D., M.B.A., as surgeon general of the United States and urging the Senate to confirm Dr. Murthy’s nomination before adjourning for the year.

Attesting to Dr. Murthy’s exceptional qualifications, Dr. Grover writes, “With the wide range of health care challenges facing the aging population, the AAMC believes that Dr. Murthy will bring strong leadership to the 140-year old office and a powerful vision for improving the health of Americans.”

The letter also highlights Dr. Murthy’s impact in health care stating that his “nomination has received broad support from the medical and public health communities, including over 100 state and national organizations.”

Outlining the responsibilities of the position, the letter explains, “The surgeon general not only oversees the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS) and the Civilian Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps, but also provides Americans with the best scientific information available on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury. As the public face of public health, the Surgeon General also is chair of the National Prevention Council.”

Dr. Murthy has been awaiting confirmation for over a year since being nominated by President Obama. If confirmed, he will succeed former Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, M.D., M.B.A., who resigned in July 2013 [see Washington Highlights, June 14, 2013]. Since then, Rear Admiral Boris D. Lushniak, M.D., M.P.H, has been serving as acting surgeon general.
