AAMC Submits Comments to FTC on Examining Competition in Health Care

May 2, 2014—The AAMC April 28 submitted comments  to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding selected issues raised during a public workshop held in March, titled “Examining Competition in Health Care.” The association’s comments focus on two issues: price transparency and narrow networks, a topic that was raised in the context of many panel discussions at the workshop.

The AAMC notes the value of promoting both competitions and changes in health care delivery that encourage coordination of care across the continuum of services. However, the letter describes that “for AAMC-member teaching hospitals and health systems, sustained support for the missions of education and research in the face of these changes is essential, not only for the health of these institutions but also for the entire health care system that receives substantial benefits from them.”

The purpose of the March 20-21 FTC workshop was to study certain activities and trends that may affect competition in the evolving health care industry. Panels of experts discussed topics including: professional regulation of health care providers, innovation in health care delivery, measuring and assessing quality of health care, and the interplay between quality and price transparency.
