AAMC Joins NDD United Letter Urging Congress to Replace Sequestration

December 6, 2013— The AAMC joined 469 national organizations in a Dec. 4 letter  urging Congress “to replace sequestration with a bipartisan, balanced approach to deficit reduction.”

The letter, led by NDD United, an alliance of organizations working to stop budget cuts to core government functions, states that the budget conference opens a “critical window” to enact a fiscal year (FY) 2014 budget that replaces sequestration and “reinvests in our eroding national priorities.”

The letter explains that nondefense discretionary (NDD) programs “play a vital role in the health and well-being of our communities,” yet the programs have been “cut dramatically and disproportionately in recent years as lawmakers work to reduce the deficit.”

After highlighting the extent and severity of cuts already made to NDD programs, the letter reiterates the need for Congress to enact a “responsible” FY 2014 budget that replaces sequestration with a “balanced plan” recognizing the cuts already made to discretionary programs. The letter adds that “relief from sequestration must be equally balanced between NDD and defense programs, as strong investments in both NDD and defense programs are necessary to keep our country competitive, safe, and secure.”

The AAMC-led Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research and the Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition (HPNEC) also joined the letter.
