AAMC Thanks Members for Voting to End Government Shutdown

October 31, 2013—AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., sent an Oct. 28 letter  commending Members of Congress who voted in favor of H.R. 2775, reopening the federal government and restoring funding for activities vital to the nation’s health and to the nation's medical schools and teaching hospitals.

Dr. Kirch urges Congress to build on the bipartisan support of the legislation to support a FY 2014 budget that replaces sequestration. The letter states, “Sequestration by design cuts programs deeply and indiscriminately. Both parties agree it was never meant to happen. Yet, it is about to happen for a second consecutive year unless Congress acts. Without a comprehensive and balanced solution, sequestration will continue to erode federal efforts essential to the health of all Americans, including medical research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the health professions training programs administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and Medicare Parts A and B payments.”

In closing, Dr. Kirch warns, “The nation’s medical schools and teaching hospitals are supporting life-saving discoveries, training the next generation of physicians and scientists, and delivering world-class health care, but continued cuts threaten these essential missions.”
