PCORI Announces Shift From Broad Toward Targeted Funding Strategy

September 27, 2013—The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Board of Governors convened Sept. 23 and announce two realignments in its approach to funding patient-centered outcomes research.

Chief Science Officer Bryan Luce, Ph.D., MBA, reported that although there will continue to be a mix of funding opportunities, emphasis will shift from broad to targeted, with an anticipated greater potential for impact. The projected mix of funding for 2014 will be $230 million for broad areas and $270 million for targeted.

At the meeting, Dr. Luce also announced the creation of a Clinical Trials Advisory Panel and revisions to the Methodology Report [see Washington Highlights, Nov. 30, 2012]. The Methodology Committee identified two new standards for inclusion: cluster randomized trials and complex interventions. Two additional standards are under consideration: value of information analysis and additional standards on systematic review methodologies. Working groups will develop the scope of work for these areas.

Additionally, Deputy Executive Director Anne Beal, M.D., M.P.H., proposed three new engagement awards to be named in honor of past chair Eugene Washington, M.D., M.Sc., vice chancellor of UCLA Health Sciences and dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles, to recognize his contribution to the formation of PCORI.  Short-term awards in knowledge, training and development, and dissemination would be designed to provide wrap-around support for research. The board will vote on the proposal at its Nov. 18 meeting.
