PCORI Announces $88.6 Million in New Funding

May 10, 2013—Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) approved funding for 51 new research projects in patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research at its May 6 Board of Governors meeting. Projects selected relate to the first four areas of PCORI’s research priorities and agenda, and include studies of best care for major chronic diseases or focus on system topics such as reducing health disparities. Researchers in 21 states received funding for 3-year projects, with an average award amount of $1,682,439.

More than 400 applications were received in Cycle II, and proposal evaluation incorporated a diverse group of reviewers including patients, caregivers, and other members of the healthcare community as well as scientists. Proposals were evaluated on scientific merit, appropriate research methods, and levels of patient engagement.

These newest awards bring the amount of funding PCORI has distributed for patient-centered outcomes research so far to $129.3 million. Current PCORI funding opportunities include the recently announced PFA for Clinical Data Research Networks CDRN) and Patient-Powered Research Networks (PPRN).
