AAMC Submits Comments on Health Information Exchange

April 26, 2013—The AAMC Apr. 22 submitted comments  to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding a request for information (RFI) on advancing interoperability and health information exchange (HIE).

In its letter, the AAMC acknowledges the many complexities in achieving HIE, including the lack of technology in certain sectors of the health care continuum and the lack of interoperability across existing electronic health record (EHR) platforms.

The two agencies issued the joint RFI to get feedback on policies that could “further drive HIE and support more person-centered, coordinated, value-driven care.”  The AAMC letter notes that many new payment and performance programs already encourage increased care coordination and should not have additional regulatory requirements added to them.

Instead, the AAMC encourages ONC to continue developing “standards to facilitate HIE exchange and encourage vendors to ensure that their certified EHRs have the appropriate capabilities to support vendor neutral interoperability.”
