CMS Gives Hospitals Affected by Hurricane Sandy Meaningful Use Extension

November 30, 2012—The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Nov. 28 extended the fiscal year 2012 attestation deadline for hospitals in New York and New Jersey that have been “adversely affected” by Hurricane Sandy. The deadline to attest for meeting the requirements of the Medicare Electronic Health Record (EHR) incentive program is Nov. 30, 2012.

To qualify for an extension, hospitals must submit an extension application that outlines the reasons why the hospital will be unable to meet the Nov. 30 deadline. Hospitals that qualify will then be instructed to enter their attestation data using CMS’ online attestation system in the spring of 2013.

Applications for extension can be downloaded on the AAMC Web site or obtained by contacting the EHR Information Center at (888) 734-6433.
