NIH Issues Guidance on Supporting Postdoctorate Training Activities

October 26, 2012—National Institutes of Health (NIH) Deputy Director for Extramural Research Sally Rockey, Ph.D., Oct. 24 clarified some misconceptions of NIH-supported postdoctoral activities.  The “Rock Talk” article notes that activities such as writing articles, participating in seminars, and attending meetings and conferences can be compensated for postdocs supported by NIH research project grants, as well as those supported by National Research Service Awards.  She also refers to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB)’s Cost Principles Circular A-21 guidelines that describe what costs educational institutions can and can’t charge to federal grants and contracts.  Dr. Rockey notes, “We all know postdocs don’t spend every moment at the bench.”
