AAMC Responds to Sebelius, Holder Regarding EHRs and Medicare, Medicaid Billing

September 28, 2012—AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., sent a Sept. 25 letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and Attorney General Eric Holder regarding reimbursement irregularities that may result from the use of electronic health records (EHRs) at the nation’s hospitals. In the letter, Dr. Kirch asks the secretary and attorney general to “recognize the long-standing commitment of AAMC members to compliance with Medicare and Medicaid rules…demonstrated by our members’ robust compliance programs.”

The letter comes in response to a Sept. 24 letter from Secretary Sebelius and Attorney General Holder to the AAMC and four other hospital associations outlining the federal government’s commitment to preventing billing mistakes and cases of possible fraud.

Dr. Kirch points to the ongoing work of the AAMC’s Compliance Officers Forum to understand the continuous compliance challenges posed by the use of EHRs and to produce advisories that guide institutions in the adoption and implementation of policies that support compliance. The letters also stresses the importance of updating regulations created to deal with paper records now that we live in an electronic world.
