Academic Medical Centers Awarded Nearly Half of New CMMI Innovation Grants

June 22, 2012—The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) June 15 announced the second round of awardees for CMMI’s Health Care Innovation Award.  Of the 81 newly announced awards, nearly half are awarded to academic medical centers.  CMMI had previously announced 26 awardees, of which 13 were AAMC members [see Washington Highlights, May 11].

In a June 15 statement, AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., applauded the announcement, saying, “Once again, medical schools and teaching hospitals are showing their innovation and creativity in leading the transformation of the country’s health care system. The latest CMS Health Care Innovation grants include awards to numerous academic medical centers directly or in collaboration with community partners. These programs will help improve the health of communities through both prevention and advanced care for the sickest patients.”

The AAMC member projects announced in this round are expected to save over $900 million over three years and include a wide variety of innovative activities, including a sepsis screening program, new models of team care and the medical home, and integrating industrial engineering methods into health care improvements.
