AAMC Thanks Kerry and Kyl for Supporting IME Funding

March 16, 2012—In a March 13 letter, AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D. thanked Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) for writing President Obama expressing their serious concern over the administration’s proposed 10 percent cut in Medicare indirect medical education (IME) funding included in the fiscal year (FY) 2013 budget.

Dr. Kirch commended the senators for their public support of Medicare IME funding, saying, “At a time when some in Washington are questioning the federal government’s investment in graduate medical education, your bipartisan letter sends a powerful message about the importance of ensuring U.S. teaching hospitals can continue to train the world’s best health professionals and provide unmatched clinical care.”

In their letter, Sens. Kerry and Kyl remind the president that the federal government has “a strong interest in ensuring there are enough physicians,” and “even if we fund medical education at the same levels we do today, we will face a severe crisis in access to medical care.” They also point out that “[t]he budget’s proposed cuts to teaching hospitals will only exacerbate the looming crisis by resulting in even less physicians being trained and threaten the unique services provided by these institutions,” and urge the administration “to reconsider these reductions in light of the federal health program enrollment projections.”
