AAMC Comments on NIH Position Statements on Revised ILAR Guide

February 3, 2012—AAMC on Jan. 30 submitted comments  on the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare’s (OLAW) Position Statements on the Eighth Edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

AAMC member institutions base their animal care and use programs and their compliance with the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals on the National Research Council’s Institute for Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR) Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. The recent revisions to the guide have been controversial, especially regarding rodent cage sizes.

In its comment letter, AAMC expresses general support for OLAW’s policy statements, but requests that OLAW explicitly state that institutions may use alternative approaches to achieve humane care and use, as long as the approach satisfies the requirements of the PHS policy as determined by OLAW. The letter also states that “the position statement concerning rodent housing should be further clarified to make it clear that the Guide’s table regarding space is not a minimum requirement.”
