Update from Leadership
Dear Colleagues,
I usually use this space to share updates with you about the AAMC Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®) but this month, I wanted to highlight the AAMC’s long-standing core work in advancing medical research. Separately, the AAMC issued a statement in response to an announcement proposing major cuts to federally funded research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). You may also be aware that we are leading a lawsuit that challenges these proposed drastic cuts to NIH funding.
The AAMC is at the forefront of critical initiatives aimed at supporting the academic medicine community and improving the health of people everywhere through these three critical areas:
Advocacy: We are prepared to take action on preserving Medicare funding for residency positions, supporting J-1 visas for international students, and improving Medicare Advantage drug and fee-for-service reimbursements.
Data sharing: New ERAS data are available on the ERAS Statistics webpage. The Dean’s Office WorkStation (DWS) Analytics for Schools now includes more reports for medical school advisors. The Thalamus Cerebellum Data & Analytics Dashboard provides insights that help institutions and programs meet recruitment goals and allows them to benchmark recruitment outcomes year over year.
Medical student resources: We work with medical schools to ensure students are prepared for residency. AAMC-supported initiatives include the Careers in Medicine® (CiM®) program, the newly improved Residency Explorer™ tool, and ERAS and CiM Specialty Spotlight webinars.
Through the AAMC and the ERAS program, you have access to data, tools, and resources designed to ease the transition to residency. You are also part of a leading organization that is dedicated to advancing the entire medical education community.
Sincerely,
Patrick Fritz
AAMC Senior Director for Residency and Fellowship Services
What We’re Hearing About the ERAS Program
We appreciate the testimonials that members of the transition to residency community are sharing with us. Want to share your positive experience with the ERAS platform? Add them on our testimonial form.
“I would like to provide strongly positive feedback on our experience navigating ERAS and dialoging with the AAMC staff as a newly accredited residency [program]. We received our initial accreditation on Jan. 16 and were able to participate in the Secondary Urology Match which began on Jan. 29. Given this tight timetable, I had many questions and uncertainty about our ability to join the Secondary Match.”
Zachariah Goldsmith, Program Coordinator, St. Luke’s University Hospital Urology Residency Program

2025 AAMC Virtual Specialty Forum
On Thursday, April 3, from 6-9 p.m. ET, the AAMC Careers in Medicine program will host its free, annual Virtual Specialty Forum to provide medical students — especially those early in their specialty exploration (Year 1, Year 2) — to specialty exposure. Registrants who attend during the scheduled time can view resources, chat with residents and program directors, and attend a physician panel presentation. Information, resources, and recordings will be archived and accessible to registrants unable to attend live. Learn more and register on the event website.
Supporting Unmatched Applicants After SOAP® Concludes
The AAMC Careers in Medicine program provides information and guidance to support applicants who remain unmatched once the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program® (SOAP®) concludes. Applicant resources help individuals explore their options, including revisiting their residency and career goals and identifying next steps, as well as support their wellbeing and normalize the unmatched experience (sign-in required). Advisor resources include a checklist for advising unmatched applicants, options and next steps available to unmatched applicants, and guidance for advising students in distress (advisor sign-in required).
Principles for Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Medical School and Residency Selection
Medical schools and residency programs can advance toward more efficient, effective, fair, and informed admissions and selection processes by thoughtfully applying artificial intelligence (AI). To help schools and programs leverage AI tools to streamline their operations and promote mission-based decision making, the AAMC — in collaboration with a multidisciplinary technical advisory committee — developed six key principles to guide the design and use of AI-based selection systems.
Seeking Community Feedback on Vision Framework for AI in Medical Education
The International Advisory Committee on Artificial Intelligence (IACAI)--a joint collaboration between the AAMC, the Asia Pacific Medical Education Network (APMEN), AMEE: the International Association for Health Professions Education, and the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE)--is seeking feedback on its drafted vision framework for integrating AI across medical education. This framework is intended to guide the implementation and use of AI in medical education across the globe and to spark international collaboration on a shared future vision. Submit your feedback.
