Teaching Third-Year Medical Students to Address Patients' Spiritual Needs in the Surgery/Anesthesiology Clerkship

Description

 A 60-minute curriculum introducing third- year medical students to strategies for engaging patients' religious and spiritual beliefs in the clinical setting. The session includes definitions of religion/spirituality, an overview of the literature on spirituality in surgery, a review of the FICA Spiritual History Tool, discussion of the role of the chaplain and the process of initiating a chaplain consult, and three cases regarding the spiritual needs of surgical patients.
