Effective May 14, 2020, the AAMC has made the difficult decision to cancel all planned in-person meetings through June 30, 2021. This decision is based on our paramount concern for protecting the health and safety of our staff and constituents, as well as our sensitivity to the profound financial effects that the pandemic is having on our member institutions and their travel budgets.
The AAMC is committed to finding safe and alternative ways to connect our community amid this new landscape, and we plan to use this opportunity to find effective and innovative approaches. We also will continue to monitor and assess this decision. When the conditions for public health and safety allow, we will consider hosting in-person meetings again.

Council of Deans at the AAMC Annual Meeting
November 2020: Council of Deans programming will be held virtually. For more information, please contact COD staff at COD@aamc.org.
Friday at the AAMC Annual Meeting (held in November) is set aside for council-specific meetings. The COD holds a variety of sessions on Friday geared toward networking, knowledge sharing and professional development. Annual highlights include the COD Business Meeting and Discussion Forum; the AAMC Leadership Presentation to COD, COTH, and the Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS); a Veterans Affairs update; and the COD Welcome Reception. Networking opportunities for the COD are also arranged throughout the weekend. The full meeting kicks off on Saturday and brings together our community from across campuses, across disciplines, and across missions to provide leadership, enable connections and deliver thought-provoking change that will transform health care.
Executive Development Seminar for Deans

The Executive Development Seminar for Deans (EDD) is held annually in January or February. It is designed for new permanent, interim, or acting deans and intended to quickly orient the newly appointed dean to the responsibilities that are integral to this key leadership position. Deans will learn from national experts and have the opportunity to problem-solve current issues at their institutions. During the seminar, new deans learn about harnessing social and emotional intelligence; negotiation skills and conflict management; stewarding institutional resources such as talent, finances, and institutional reputation; best practices for advocacy; and emerging issues at academic medical centers. This seminar offers opportunities for new deans to network with one another and with AAMC leadership, learn from experiences at different schools, and build a cohesive peer group that provides support beyond the classroom.

Council of Deans Spring Meeting
The COD Spring Meeting will be held virtually April 8-9, 2021. Please contact COD staff at COD@aamc.org for program details.
The COD Spring Meeting is held annually in March/April and is the only national meeting designed exclusively for medical school deans. Every other year it is held jointly with the Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems (COTH). The Spring Meeting provides deans with the opportunity to access shared experiences and learn from global experts about promising practices that can be implemented to address key challenges to sustaining the medical education enterprise. In addition to putting leaders in touch with the ideas and experiences of experts inside and outside of academic medicine, the meeting provides opportunities for networking and interaction based on adult learning principles that will spark the creativity and novel thinking needed to drive change.
