Group on Regional Medical Campuses (GRMC)

July 2015

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities: The GRMC took time at the June Steering Committee Meeting to highlight strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities of regional medical campuses and the GRMC. Of note, the committee sees regional medical campuses as ideal settings for innovation, community involvement, and strong student-faculty relationships. The group sees opportunities relating to increased liaison membership from other AAMC groups, pilot tested innovations, and expanding GME at community hospitals.

Outcomes data: Efforts are being made to obtain, analyze and publish outcomes data relating to medical training that takes place on regional medical campuses. The GRMC would specifically like to develop a methodology for tracking students from medical school to residency (and fellowship) and eventual medical practice focusing on location, specialty, and board certification.

Five year vision and goals of the GRMC and regional medical campuses:

  • Expanded membership in the GRMC and more engagement from participants
  • Development of a training program for faculty on regional medical campuses, especially community based volunteer faculty
  • Wider implementation of longitudinal integrated curricula, especially on regional medical campuses, with expansion across the entire medical school curriculum
  • Increased use of technology, specifically as it relates to bringing knowledge directly from the classroom to the bedside
  • Expanded regional/community GME network which supports regional healthcare needs
  • Increased involvement of regional medical campus faculty in medical school admissions and governance
