About
The AAMC’s professional development group for research deans (and similar research administrative leaders) provides a national forum for action on issues critical to the research enterprise, and for linking advances in research with improvements in health. GRAND “designated representatives” are appointed by medical school deans. GRAND “members” can request to be added directly to the group. GRAND “affiliates” can join the group from non-member organizations.
At the request of a group of research deans, the AAMC organized a meeting in 1999 to discuss important issues in support, management, and oversight of biomedical research. The meeting was well attended, and the research deans were enthusiastic about forming a permanent professional development group with AAMC. The group named itself the Group on Research Advancement and Development (GRAND).
In September 2002, the AAMC Executive Council formally approved designation of GRAND, noting that no other national organization similarly meets the professional development needs of the research deans.
GRAND has met each year since 1999, focusing on issues critical to the advancement of research at medical schools and teaching hospitals. The meetings have been organized by an active and engaged Steering Committee. In addition, the Group maintains an active listserv that provides a useful source of information, as well as advice, on best practices in research administration and policy.
