Energy and Commerce Committee Members Seek Feedback on GME Financing

December 12, 2014—A bipartisan group of eight members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee released a Dec. 6 “Open Letter Requesting Information on Graduate Medical Education (GME)” seeking stakeholder and public feedback on GME financing.

The committee specifically seeks feedback on the current financing structure for GME; problems and potential solutions to address workforce shortages; the efficiency, effectiveness, and stability of the current GME system; opinions on current GME reform proposals; and how to incentivize high quality training programs.

The letter states, “Earlier this year, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a report examining and making recommendations for sweeping changes to our nation’s financing, governance, and program design for graduate medical education. As Congress prepares to review the IOM recommendations, we believe additional input is needed.”

Health Subcommittee Chair Joe Pitts (R-Pa.), Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), and Reps. Gene Green (D-Texas), Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Morgan Griffith (R-Va.), and Kathy Castor (D-Fla.) signed the letter.

The committee requests feedback no later than Jan. 16, 2015.
