Tracking NIH Funding

Last updated: May 18, 2026

Summary

The AAMC is closely tracking developments in National Institutes of Health (NIH) extramural funding. This page provides regular updates on NIH-obligated funding, drawing from NIH RePORTER. All figures and tables are limited to NIH extramural funding and exclude subprojects. All data, including trend data, are presented for the federal fiscal year (FY), which begins Oct. 1.

To enable comparisons across fiscal years, all figures and tables display data from the beginning of each fiscal year through the most recent date with available data for FY 2026. Currently, data displayed in the figures and tables cover the period of Oct. 1 through May 15 for every fiscal year, with the exception of Figures 1 and 2, which display full fiscal year data for FY 2021-2025.

Data limitations: The figures and tables on this page rely on real-time data updates to FY 2026 awards posted to NIH RePORTER and may contain some inaccuracies.
