President Signs Helium Bill

October 11, 2013—President Obama Oct. 2 signed legislation (P.L. 113-40) to continue sales from the Federal Helium Reserve to private entities.  The Helium Stewardship Act (H.R. 527) authorizes the Department of the Interior to continue selling helium from the reserve until 3 billion cubic feet of the gas remain, which would be available to federal agencies for scientific research.

The AAMC joined 120 universities, research associations, and companies in a Sept. 10 letter  to congressional leadership urging passage of the legislation.  The letter stated the legislation was necessary “to prevent a needless disruption to the U.S. economy that would put millions of jobs at risk.”
