Senate Confirms Tavenner as CMS Administrator

May 17, 2013—The Senate May 15 voted 91-7 to confirm Marilyn Tavenner as the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  Tavenner had been serving as the acting administrator of CMS since late 2011.  Tavenner received bipartisan support during the Finance Committee’s nomination hearing April 9 [see Washington Highlights, April 12] and the nomination was ultimately passed out of the Senate Finance Committee on April 23.

After the Senate vote, Finance Chair Max Baucus (D-Mont.) praisedTavenner saying, “Marilyn Tavenner has spent her entire career providing care for people in need.  Her experience in health care is real and varied, and it will serve her well as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.”

He also commented on the importance of creating certainty at CMS and that “this is a critical time to have someone with Ms. Tavenner’s extensive experience confirmed and in charge of Medicare and Medicaid.  We need a confirmed administrator to properly implement the Affordable Care Act and make sure it works as intended.  I’m confident she has what it takes to strengthen our health programs for future generations.”
