AAMC Members Named MSSP ACOs

July 13, 2012—The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) July 9 announced the selection of 89 accountable care organizations (ACOs) to participate in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), authorized under section 3022 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA, P.L., 111-148 and P.L. 111-152).  The MSSP ACO final rule, released October 2011, offered both April 1 and July 1 start dates for the first year of the program [see Washington Highlights, Oct. 21, 2011], and CMS previously announced 27 ACOs participating in the MSSP [see Washington Highlights April 13].

In a July 10 press release, AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D. applauded the new ACOs: “Medical schools, teaching hospitals, and their physician faculty are committed to leading the development and implementation of transformative models for delivering well-coordinated, high-quality health care. The groups chosen for the ACO program demonstrate the immense potential approaches like this have for containing costs and transforming the system to be more patient-focused and efficient.”

ACOs at or affiliated with AAMC members include: Advocate Health Partners; Indiana University Health ACO, Inc.; Iowa Health Accountable Care, L.C.; University of Iowa Affiliated Health Providers, L.C.; MaineHealth Accountable Care Organization; Oakwood Accountable Care Organization, LLC; Medical Mall Services of Mississippi; BJC HealthCare ACO, LLC; Barnabas Health ACO-North, LLC; Mount Sinai Care, LLC; Summa Accountable Care Organization; University Hospitals Coordinated Care; Memorial Hermann Accountable Care Organization; Methodist Patient Centered ACO; and Aurora Accountable Care Organization, LLC.

The 89 selected organizations will be coordinating care for nearly 1.2 million beneficiaries in 40 states and Washington, D.C. Including the 32 pioneer model ACOs that were announced last December [see Washington Highlights, Dec. 22, 2011], and six Physician Group Practice Transition Demonstration organizations that started in January 2011, there now are 154 organizations participating in Medicare shared savings initiatives, serving over 2.4 million Medicare patients across the country.
