Senators Urge “Strong Commitment” to NIH

March 30, 2012—A bipartisan group of 49 senators sent a March 26 letter urging the Senate Appropriations Committee to “maintain a strong commitment to funding the National Institutes of Health (NIH)….”  The letter states, “We believe that it is essential to continue federal support for medical research funding because of the potential health benefits for all Americans and the importance of ensuring that our Nation remains at the forefront of medical research.”

The letter, which was organized by Senators Bob Casey (D-Pa.) and Richard Burr (R-N.C.),  was addressed to the chairs and ranking members of both the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee.

The letter also notes, "Our investment in the NIH has yielded an unprecedented number of scientific advances that have improved health outcomes and contributed significantly to the Nation’s economic growth,” and cautions, “Unfortunately, America is losing ground as the world leader in research and development and researchers are struggling to secure funding.”
