Structural Competency: Curriculum for Medical Students, Residents, and Interprofessional Teams on the Structural Factors That Produce Health Disparities

Last Updated: March 13, 2020

Description

A short (4-hour) curricular module focused on structural competency, teaching the fundamentals of how structural factors impact health and grounding the concepts in concrete, clinical examples.  The didactic components are reinforced with interactive activities including case-based discussions and individual reflection exercises. Ideally, the curriculum would be taught and facilitated by an interprofessional team; it is appropriate for all levels of learners (e.g., health professions students, residents, faculty, staff, and practitioners). Though structural racism is a key element, the curriculum focuses more broadly on structural inequities and oppression.
