GSA Committee on Student Diversity Affairs (GSA-COSDA)

July 2013

Greetings OSR! The GSA-COSDA has had several productive meetings recently where we have identified several topics of interest, and issues to be address within the OSR, GSA and AAMC. Those most pertinent to the OSR include:

  • Evaluating if our planned national and joint meetings will address key student issues such as pipelines, legal immigration status, and other common diversity issues.
  • Making students aware of research opportunities concerning diversity issues in academic medicine. Data from the GQ and the new 2nd year survey may provide useful information for student researchers interested in diversity within medical education.
  • Establishing methodology for the identification of Diversity Affairs Representatives from AAMC Member Institutions.
  • Launching the National Medical School Outreach (NMSO) Initiative and Web site.
  • Updating the Diversity Affairs Handbook to be used as a reference by diversity affairs personnel at AAMC member institutions. This handbook will include information on topics such as program design, evaluation, funding to provide a resource for professional development for this office.
  • Distinguishing CODA from GDI – CODA is a committee with GSA and is thus focuses on diversity within student affairs issues. The Group on Diversity and Inclusion (GDI) is a AAMC group addressing similar issues in graduate medical education and faculty.
  • Working with the National Post-Bacc Collaborative (NPBC) to support them with perspective on diversity issues.

If you have questions, comments or recommendations concerning GSA-COSDA, please feel free to contact me.
