Careers in Medicine Advisory Committee

April 2016

Hello OSR,

I am pleased to provide the following updates from the Careers in Medicine Advisory Committee and staff.

Careers in Medicine Website: The information on the Careers in Medicine website continues to be updated through phase 2 of our modernization project. The Assessments Dashboard has been implemented and now includes a number of new and updated assessments to be used by medical students throughout the country. We are continuing to focus on organizing the content available through Careers in Medicine to make it more digestible for visitors to the website. While there have been a number of changes, many things have remained the same. You can continue to search over 2,150 residency programs on the website, and the program data has been expanded to include statistics and information about programs and their residents, allowing you to better gauge your competitiveness as an applicant to the program. The “Characteristics of Entering Residents” for each specialty has been reorganized, including new data on categorical and preliminary year-specific entering statistics.

Residency Selection Analytics Project: The Careers in Medicine Advisory Committee remains a strong advocate for the development of comprehensive resource for residency program information, much like the MSAR for medical school admissions. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the recent survey distributed to the OSR regarding factors important in residency selection and applications. We had over 600 respondents, and the data collected through this survey will be instrumental in the effective development of this resource..

Careers in Medicine Excellence in Medical Student Career Advising Award: Applications for the 2016 Careers in Medicine Excellence in Medical Student Career Advising Award will open in April. This year we will have three categories of awards, including an individual award, program award, and a program support staff award. Specific details regarding the criteria for these awards, as well as the nomination packets themselves, will be available on the Careers in Medicine website. Nominations will be due in July. The winners will be formally announced at Learn Serve Lead 2016: The AAMC Annual Meeting.

This will be my last update as the OSR Representative to the Careers in Medicine Advisory Committee. I appreciate the opportunity to serve in this role and look forward to hearing all of the exciting updates from Careers in Medicine over the upcoming year. The next Careers in Medicine Advisory Committee meeting will take place prior to the PDC in June. Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or recommendations for the future development of Careers in Medicine
