This webinar, recorded on September 9, 2016 describes the importance-to students and medical schools-of having clear, written policies and procedures available to prospective students, as well as recently admitted and currently enrolled students. The practical advice offered includes how to create and effectively publicize procedures for students to obtain and use disability accommodations, as well as tips for developing clear processes for medical school faculty and staff to ensure students feel welcomed and receive appropriate, reasonable accommodations in both didactic and clinical settings. The presenters highlight how these best practices benefit all medical students and contribute to the school’s overall diversity.

Barbara Blacklock, MA, LISW
University of Minnesota, Disability Resource Center
Barbara has worked in Disability Resources at the University of Minnesota for over 30 years and presents locally, nationally and internationally on disability issues. To proactively work with Academic Health Center programs, 15 years ago Barbara developed and implemented the “College Model” of service delivery at the University of Minnesota. She is currently the Disability Resource Center Program Coordinator to the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center Programs.
Along with her role as a direct service provider, for the past 10 years Barbara has been the co-chair of the University of Minnesota Provost's Committee on Student Mental Health. She recently was the Project Director of the Marcus Foundation Faculty Education Grant: Taking it to the Next Level: Advancing Awareness and Equity of Medical Students with Invisible Disabilities. She is co-author of the monograph Meeting the Needs of Students with Disabilities in Health Related Education Programs (2014), published by the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) and is a on the Steering Committee for the Coalition for Disability Access in Graduate Health Science and Medical Education.
Phaedra Bell, PhD
University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine
Phaedra is the Executive Director of MD Admissions and the Student Experience for the UCSF school of Medicine. Her professional experience has focused on program, organizational, and professional development in higher education. At both public and private universities, she has led diverse teams of colleagues to transform faculty, staff, and educational programs.
Previously, Phaedra led professional development initiatives for postdoctoral fellows at Stanford University where she also taught in the Introduction to Humanities (IHUM) program. Phaedra has also taught at UC Santa Barbara and the University of Washington and teaches Team Learning and Communications Skills at UCSF.
Lisa Meeks, PhD
University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine
Lisa is currently on staff with the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine where she is the Director of Medical Student Disability Services and Assistant Professor of Medicine. She is also a co-founder and President elect of the Coalition for Disability Access in Health Science and Medical Education co-editor and an author of The Guide to Assisting Students with Disabilities: Equal Access in Health Science and Professional Education (Springer Publishing). In addition to her work in higher education, Lisa has developed specialized trainings for the National Security Agency (NSA), the Department of Defense (DOD), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Association of Higher Education and Disabilities (AHEAD), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Currently her work focuses on developing computer simulations for use in remediating medical students’ communication skills.
