Peer Benchmarking and Data
On March 30, 2017, the AAMC hosted a webinar to discuss plans for future reports and to walk through three of its COTH hospital-specific reports: Medicare Quality Pay-for-Performance Report, Hospital Compare Benchmark Report, and the Estimated Financial Impact of Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) Proposed and Final Rules Report. COTH Data Tool
The COTH Data Tool enables survey-participating users to query the data store of all COTH Annual Survey of Hospital Operations and Financial Performance (OpFin) results from 1998 forward. Data may be generated in tabular or graphic formats. Data categories available for analysis include operating, balance sheet, utilization and cost and graduate medical education metrics.
COTH Annual Survey of Hospital Operations and Financial Performance (OpFin) Annual Report
This COTH financial and operational survey is published in electronic and print format once per year. All short term general, non-federal COTH members are eligible to participate. The survey is fielded in May of each year to collect operational, financial, educational, and staffing characteristics for the prior fiscal year. Annual response rate to the survey is 78%. Contact Merle Haberman at email@example.com for more information.
COTH Quarterly Financial Survey and Benchmark Report
The data collected via the COTH Quarterly Financial Survey, conducted since 1999, provides critically important information necessary to monitor the financial condition of member teaching hospitals. The report provides the most current financial data available on teaching hospitals for members to compare their information against their COTH peers. The reports are available to all members who participate in the survey. Contact DHCAsurvey@aamc.org for further information.
Medicaid Direct and Indirect Graduate Medical Education Payments: A 50-State Survey
This publication provides the results of a recent survey of state Medicaid programs on their policies for financing direct graduate medical education costs, and indirect medical education costs, which reflect the higher patient costs at teaching hospitals. The survey features information on payment type, funding mechanisms and methodologies, and expenditure estimates.
Mercer Integrated Health Networks (IHN) Executive Compensation Survey
The AAMC and Mercer Human Resource Consulting, Inc. collaborate each year to conduct the IHN Survey at no charge to COTH members. All participating COTH members receive a complimentary survey report each fall, which consists of COTH-only data. By participating in the IHN survey, COTH members are also eligible to access - at a substantial discount - Mercer's extensive suite of IHN compensation surveys. Contact Stefanie Wisniewski at firstname.lastname@example.org for further information.
AAMC Report on Resident/Fellow Stipends and Benefits
Data from the AAMC Survey of Resident/Fellow Stipends and Benefits are publically available to AAMC constituents and others with an interest in graduate medical education issues. The survey has been fielded annually since 1968. Institutions—either hospitals or medical schools—are instructed to complete the survey only if they issue the checks for resident stipends.
Hospital Compare Quality Report
The AAMC creates and distributes quarterly quality reports to all COTH members displaying institutional performance, along with COTH and National benchmarks, on national quality measures. These measures are included in the Value Based Purchasing (VBP) Program, Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP), the Hospital Acquired Conditions (HAC) Program, and the Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program.
Medicare Quality Pay-for-Performance Report
This custom report illustrates step-by-step how your hospital's performance on individual Medicare quality measures is transformed into payment adjustments, including HVBP, HRRP, and HACRP, and displays the impact of each program and even individual quality measures on your payment rates. It walks through Medicare's scoring methodology and identifies areas for improvement, allowing the user to simulate different quality rates to estimate payment impacts from quality improvement gains. Finally, it benchmarks your performance in the programs against other COTH hospitals.
Estimated Financial Impact of Medicare Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) Proposed and Final Rules Report
This report, generated uniquely for each member institution, estimates hospital-specific Medicare inpatient revenue paid under the Inpatient Prospective Payment System for the upcoming fiscal year to reflect rate updates and policy changes proposed and/or finalized in the annual regulatory process. The report provides users the ability to input data and model overall impacts and per-case rate changes in a given fiscal year for their institution. The reports are sent to all COTH members generally within one month of the release of the IPPS proposed regulations and within weeks of the release of the IPPS final regulations.
