The Way Forward on COVID-19

A Road Map to Reset the Nation's Approach to the Pandemic

We're at a tipping point. COVID-19 cases continue to rise at an alarming rate across much of the United States. More than 200,000 Americans have died, and more than 7 million have been infected by the virus.

If the nation does not change its course – and soon – deaths in the United States could well be in the multiples of hundreds of thousands.

We at the AAMC are dedicated to ensuring the health of our nation. This starts with a plan to address COVID-19 head-on.

The Way Forward on COVID-19: A Road Map to Reset the Nation’s Approach to the Pandemic includes 11 evidence-based actions — both immediate and long-term — set forth as a comprehensive, coordinated plan based on AAMC experts’ understanding of the pandemic as doctors, scientists, and medical educators.

As part of this road map, we will provide new guidance, updated actions, and more from our experts as they are developed.

A Road Map to Reset the Nation's Approach to the Pandemic

The road map identifies a set of nine evidence-based, commonsense actions the AAMC believes is essential to act on immediately, and two longer-term, larger-scale changes to improve the overall health of our nation. They include:

  1. Remedy critical supply and drug shortages.
  2. Increase availability and accessibility of testing.
  3. Establish national standards on face coverings.

AAMC Guide to COVID-19 Tests and Testing

Health care workers perform COVID-19 tests along a line of cars. A sign says "COVID-19 Drive-Up Testing."

As the conversation around COVID-19 testing focuses on how many tests should be conducted and who should be tested, questions and confusion remain. The AAMC has developed a guide to help you understand what the different types of tests are and what they mean, both for individuals and for our nation as we grapple with how to move forward through this pandemic.
