The Nuts and Bolts of Caring for and Teaching about Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Youth

Video Length: 1 hour, 31 minutes

    Description:
Transgender and gender nonconforming youth present unique challenges to health care professionals. While they have the same health concerns as cisgender adolescents, providers must consider specific topics and utilize customized approaches to the interview of both patient and family. As this population requires a specialized approach to patient care so does the education and training of the next generation of their care providers. During this webinar, members of the AAMC Advisory Committee on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Sex Development will address how to care for and how to teach about transgender and gender nonconforming youth.

    Learning Objectives:
This session aims to educate viewers on:

    • The importance of care for transgender and gender nonconforming youth.
    • The background and approach for educators to teach the biology of gender and identity, and how to apply a model or paradigm based in human development, based on content and examples of patient care provided for clinicians.
    • The basics of clinical gender medicine.
    • The integration of ethics into clinical practice.
    • The other resources available for ongoing education, training, and support.
