Firstly, let me say I hope you are all doing well in light of the coronavirus outbreak. A lot of our usual activities in medical education have halted, changed, or been postponed, but I trust things will return to normal soon and am incredibly proud of all of the hard work our medical professionals are doing to keep us healthy. Crazy to think that’ll be us one day!
In light of all the recent shutdowns and social distancing, we may find ourselves with a bit more time in front of our laptops (although- we’re medical students, so maybe this isn’t such a big change for us!) Regardless, let me take this time to give you a few key updates on all things OSR in the Western Region.
Since starting as your Western Chair last fall, I have been amazed to see just how many of you are not only excited to contribute to national change in medical education, but also possess the drive and skills to see those contributions through. In order to help you achieve this end, I’ve worked with our delegate team to create a WOSR Project Repository (housed in Google Drive) to help us keep track of all things related to our region-specific projects. Establishing this repository was a tremendous effort that I thank all participating members in helping create, and I look forward to seeing it continue to grow in future years. If you haven’t already checked out the repository, email me for access! I’d love to see your project ideas come to life!
In other news, as many of you know, the AAMC Spring PDC Conference where the regional OSR meetings were to take place has been cancelled. Currently there are no plans to reschedule yet, so for now operate under the assumption that we will all meet again at LSL this fall. While I’m sad to not see you all at the spring conference, I look forward to staying in touch digitally until we can meet again in person. Also, keep in mind that due to this cancellation, voting for your new Ad Board will occur online, with more information coming out shortly, so keep your eyes peeled!
Finally, on a personal note, I’d like to extend a ‘you got this!’ to each and every one of you out there struggling with the changes brought on by this outbreak. For M1s, it may mean your classes are cancelled indefinitely, for M2s, it may mean your board exams are postponed, and for M3s and M4s, clerkships and interviews are likely up in the air right now. Whatever challenges we all experience now, (while we are allowed to grieve them!) I invite you to remember that these challenges help us prove our resilience as we enter a career marked often by altered expectations and unexpected hurdles. You’ve made it this far, nothing can stop you now.
Thank you so much to everyone for allowing me to serve as your Western Chair this year. While I myself have my Step 1 exam approaching soon, I will remain available in my role up until that fateful morning! If you have any suggestions, recommendations, or concerns, please email me. I have an ‘open email’ policy- I look forward to hearing from you!
