    AAMC Names Stephen J. Lopez, PhD, MBA, as Chief Information Officer

    The AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) has named Stephen J. Lopez, PhD, MBA, as chief information officer (CIO) after an extensive national search. As CIO, Lopez leads the AAMC’s Information Technology (IT) team and guides immediate and long-term strategic approaches to support the association and its member institutions. In this role, he enhances and implements IT governance processes to ensure timely, cost-effective delivery of high-quality applications and infrastructure.

    Lopez joined the AAMC in 2015 as a senior director overseeing information security, technology infrastructure operations, and enterprise architecture. He was named interim CIO in 2021, during which time his steadfast focus and leadership ensured that the AAMC’s IT modernization, cloud migration, and ongoing operations continued without interruption.

    “Steve has a deep understanding of and commitment to the AAMC’s mission in medical education and beyond, and he brings substantial experience across many domains within IT,” said David J. Skorton, MD, AAMC president and CEO. “He is recognized as a supportive and decisive leader, as well as a resourceful problem solver. Steve’s contributions have been especially critical to improving the infrastructure that will allow us to deepen and broaden our engagement with faculty, staff, and learners.”

    Before joining the AAMC, Lopez held several roles at the National Board of Medical Examiners, including vice president of support services from 2002-2011 and associate vice president of technology services from 1999-2002. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member at DeVry University, Strayer University, Philadelphia University, and Drexel University. Lopez earned his bachelor of science in applied science and technology from Thomas Edison State University, his master of business administration in finance and operations management from the University of Phoenix, and his doctorate in information systems from Nova Southeastern University.
