In a related effort, The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences held an “elevator speech” contest in June 2016 to encourage students to learn how to relay information concisely and directly. In just 90 seconds, students had to translate complex research in biochemistry, molecular biology, cancer biology, and experimental therapeutics into everyday language. As fourth-year graduate student Michael McGuire explained, the exercise taught him “how to condense the important parts of my project [on cancer mutations] into a meaty talk and deliver it clearly.”
